Ōstium: an entrance, a mouth, a door, a cavity, an opening.

About Ōstium:

These Substack letters chronicle the complications of infertility and my struggle to start a family. I do my best to write these as close to real time as possible (within 3-6 months of the events happening (writing this in 2024 -2026)), so you get a true, in-the-moment look at the IVF process for me and the behind-the-scenes moments of a topic often skirted (or shunned/shamed) in modern society. Talking about topics like this helps them be more real, more understandable for others. And when we have more understanding, we have more compassion and tenderness toward one another and our own lived experiences.

These letters aren’t solely for folks going through IVF, they are for everyone to gleam some insight into the thin line between desire and reality. These letters are and will remain free to read. I think it’s very important to keep discussion of infertility and assisted reproductive technologies open and fluid. You will never have to pay to read about my journey. If you subscribe, each new letter will be sent directly to your email inbox and you will get to read them as soon as they are posted. When you subscribe, you’ll get full access to all of my letters in real time as well as the letter archives.

IVF and infertility are a hard road to be on. For some folks, they are only on it for a little while before being able to conceive. For others, that journey is years and years long. I have no idea how long ours will be. I don’t know if it will result in a pregnancy or a child. I don’t know if we will never live that life. But I do know that in writing and sharing about it, I am giving some insight into that process. I am sharing my heart. I am using my voice to make this process a real, visceral thing.

This is one person, one family’s experience with IVF, and I hope you’ll come along with us.

If you are intrested in reading more, please head over to my free Substack to read my letters on my journey through infertility and IVF. Through these I explore shame, grief, complications, and growth while attempting to start a family.
